From Formulation Challenge to Solution with Xplore Synergia

Introduction
At Xplore Instruments, we have spent decades developing the tools that enable polymer scientists worldwide to work faster, smarter, and with less material. But we have always known that the instrument is only part of the story. The expertise behind it matters just as much.
That is why we created Xplore Synergia, a service that goes far beyond selling equipment. Through Synergia, customers can hire Xplore’s own polymer scientists, together with our micro-compounding equipment, to work directly on their formulation challenges. You bring your material. We bring our knowledge, our lab, and our instruments.
Why Synergia? The Formulation Gap
Developing a new polymer formulation is hard. It requires dozens of iterations, precise process control, deep knowledge of how materials behave under shear, heat, and time, and access to equipment that can run meaningful experiments at small scale without wasting expensive material.
Most R&D teams face at least one of these challenges: they have the material but lack the equipment; they have the equipment but lack the processing expertise; or they have both but cannot afford the time it takes to optimise independently. Synergia solves all three at once.

A Natural Fit: PHA and Biobased Polymers
One of the areas where Synergia has the most immediate impact is in the development of biodegradable formulations. Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) is one of the most exciting biopolymers available today, fully bio-based, biodegradable, and biocompatible. But it is also notoriously difficult to process. Its narrow thermal stability window, sensitivity to moisture and shear, and tendency toward rapid molecular weight loss during melt processing have been barriers for many development teams.
This is precisely where Xplore’s expertise adds the most value. Our scientists have extensive hands-on experience with PHA processing, and our micro-compounders, with their independently controlled screw speed and recirculation time, are uniquely suited to the demands of these sensitive materials.
Neat PHA Formulations: Optimising processing conditions, stabiliser selection, and antioxidant systems to maximise thermal stability and molecular weight retention during melt processing.
PHA Biobased Blends: Developing PHA/PLA, PHA/PBAT and other biobased blends with tailored plasticisers and compatibilisers for improved flexibility, toughness, and processability.
Filled PHA Composites: Incorporating mineral fillers, natural fibres, and functional additives into PHA matrices for enhanced stiffness, barrier properties, or biomedical performance.
Why PHA development is uniquely challenging
P(3HB), P(3HB-co-4HB), P(3HB-co-3HV) and their copolymers each behave differently under melt processing. Without the right combination of stabiliser, chain extender, and processing protocol, you can lose more than 70% of your complex viscosity in just five minutes at processing temperature. That is not a formulation problem, it is a processing knowledge problem.
Through Synergia, our scientists work alongside your team to identify the right additive system, establish the optimal processing window, and characterise the resulting filament or compound, all using the same Xplore equipment your own lab may eventually adopt. The knowledge transfer is built in.
How a Synergia Engagement Works
| 1 | Initial consultation | Discuss your material, target application and challenges. Define scope, objectives and timeline together. |
| 2 | Formulation planning | Our scientists design a structured experimental plan covering additive systems, processing parameters and characterisation methods. |
| 3 | Lab execution at Xplore | Your material is processed in our Sittard facility. You can be present throughout, watching, learning, and directing. |
| 4 | Characterisation | Compounds are tested for rheology, thermal stability and mechanical properties. Results compiled in a full technical report. |
| 5 | Knowledge transfer | All protocols, parameters and know-how are documented and transferred to your team so you can replicate and scale independently. |
Beyond PHA: The Breadth of Synergia
While biodegradable polymer formulation development is a particular strength, Synergia is available for the full range of polymer systems relevant to our customers’ work:
- Recycled polymer blends and compatibilisation
- Nanocomposites and functional filler systems
- Biobased composites for 3D printing filaments
- Shear-sensitive elastomers and rubber compounds
- Specialty compounds for biomedical applications
The combination of world-class instruments and deep materials expertise is rare. Synergia makes it accessible without the commitment of purchasing equipment or hiring specialist staff before you know your formulation is viable.
